I grew up in a small town in the south of France, and my parents had busy lives. I started going to the movies by myself before I turned six. Alain, the owner, would drive me home after closing his theater. I’d help with cleaning, selling candies, and cutting tickets. By the age of ten, I was going four times a week, and I kept that up until I turned eighteen and discovered punk rock and parties.
I have a deep love for independent theaters, and I am so happy that Portland, our new home, has the best. Cinemagic, Laurelhurst, Hollywood… throw a rock and you’ll hit a theater cooler than the previous one.
Pictured here is the Grand Lake Theater, an icon of the Bay Area, where we moved from.
